Viva! & Sky News: Happy Eggs Farms Exposed

8 Reasons You Should Stop Drinking Milk Now

image

What could be more American than a glass of milk? Cow's milk, that is. In light of this common perception, the time is long overdue to add the milk mustache to that ever-growing list of American myths. Human beings are not designed to drink any milk except human milk (only during infancy, of course). As you'll see below, consuming dairy products—milk, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, ice cream, etc.—is not green and it's not healthy.

It's also a nightmare for the cows themselves. Here's a little of how the folks at GoVeg describe it: "The 9 million cows living on dairy farms in the United States spend most of their lives in large sheds or on feces-caked mud lots, where disease is rampant. Cows raised for their milk are repeatedly impregnated. Their babies are taken away so that humans can drink the milk intended for the calves. When their exhausted bodies can no longer provide enough milk, they are sent to slaughter and ground up for hamburgers."

1. Dairy cows produce waste.
Lots of waste. In fact, your average dairy cow produces
120 pounds of waste every day—equal to that of more than two dozen people, but without toilets, sewers, or treatment plants.

2. Let me repeat: Dairy cows produce lots and lots of waste (and greenhouse gases).
California produces one-fifth of the country's total milk supply. According to
MilkSucks.com, "in the Central Valley of California, the cows produce as much excrement as a city of 21 million people, and even a smallish farm of 200 cows will produce as much nitrogen as in the sewage from a community of 5,000 to 10,000 people, according to a U.S. Senate report on animal waste."

Global Warming: MEAT THE TRUTH

How Does Drinking Milk Harm Cows?

Dairy cows are continually kept pregnant and lactating and their babies are taken away from them when they are only two days old. The life of a dairy cow is not as natural as you might think, especially considering that 80 percent of dairy cows are made pregnant through artificial insemination. 1

The only way for a cow, like any other mammal, to produce milk is for the cow to have a baby. The milk produced by cows is naturally meant for baby calves; however, because people want to drink this milk, the baby calves are taken away from their mothers when they are only a few days old. 1 Cows are extremely maternal animals and both the mother cow and the baby calf suffer terribly from being separated at such a young age. One study showed that calves with no interaction with their mothers or only interaction through a fence, "induced significant increases in walking, butting, urinating, and vocalizing"2. In fact, one cow missed her baby so much that she broke out of her paddock and trekked through 8 kilometers of paddocks and rivers to find her baby 3. On dairy farms, mother cows can be heard bellowing out wildly trying to find their babies as well as running after the cattle trucks that take their babies to separate farms.

The baby calves lives are then decided by their gender. If the calf is male then he is taken away to be raised and slaughtered for meat. Because of this the NZ dairy industry contributes to the death of more than 1 million male calves every year. 4 That’s one death every 20 seconds. In fact, 55 percent of all beef in New Zealand supermarkets comes directly from the dairy industry. 5 These male calves are transported to separate meat farms or slaughterhouses, where they will never see their mothers again. Transported as young as 4 days of age, they endure cold and hunger, without food for up to 30 hours, while struggling to maintain their footing in the cattle truck.

Pregnancy at Slaughter: What Happens to the Calves?

image

What happens when a cow is pregnant at the time of slaughter? I almost wish I didn't know. From the calves experiencing their mother's death from inside her, while they too suffer or die their own terrible death, to live calves being cut from their dead mother's womb, so that their blood can be drained for science while they're still alive--it's all horrific, and none of it is ever talked about, even though it's a part of the dairy and beef industries and a part of how people get their "finest" leather. There's enough to cover here that two posts are required. This is the first.

By accident a few months ago, I ended up watching a video of a pregnant cow already stunned and hung upside down--and the video showed an apparently almost-full-term calf struggling inside and against the mother's body, kicking in desperation, dying a horrible death inside the womb. Later came the image of that young calf's presumably dead body tossed into a bin (though it seems still live calves are often tossed as well).

Savory Sweet Potato Quiche

image

For the crust:

  • 1/2 cup oat flour
  • 1/2 cup whole-wheat pastry flour

  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup olive oil (try to use extra virgin)
  • Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. The dough should hold together in a ball, but if it doesn't, add some water.
  • Place in a container or wrap it in shrink-wrap, then refrigerate while you get your filling together.

For the filling:

  • 3 medium sweet potatoes, baked in a 400-degree oven for about 30 minutes or until a fork inserted in the middle slides all the way through. Remove, cool, and peel.
  • 1 8-oz tub (minus the 2 tbsp used for the crust) vegan cream cheese, either plain or savory.
  • 1 12-oz packet of silken extra firm tofu
  • 3-4 sprigs of rosemary (about 1 tbsp chopped)
  • 3-4 sage leaves
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes

He had only been in the world one day, but it was to be his last. Billy, one of many male calves considered worthless by the dairy industry, was about to receive a fatal hammer blow to the head when a man named Larry intervened. A Beautiful Friendship Between The Cow and The Dog

March 6th 2008 Baby Obama turned 1 month. I received her on February 14th 2008.

Before that she was abandoned by her mother we assume because the other cows cleaned her off or she was the heifer's first calf or the calf's eyes are white (birth defect). My boyfriend bung her home, he so I could care for her. I didn't want to, because unlike humans cows have to have first milk from their mother to live. But I did anyway. I got her some fake first milk from the Tractor Supply and nursed her every 4 hours for a month. She lived outside on my front porch inside a kid's tent. Yes it was messy and hard work, but she was just a baby. This video is just a glimpse of a few minutes of this calf's life.

The dog. Tracey is a mixed pit bull (WE THINK) from a rescue shelter if you would like to make a donation to them here is the web address. http://www.angelsofassisi.org/

Now for the sad part

Animals are unpredictable creatures, just from the comments I see people have no clue how instinctive they are. Tracey dog never showed any signs of rage or ill toward baby. Tracey Dog is a frog hunter that is right my dog enjoys hunting and playing with frogs till they die. She's a dog, it's an instinct, because she's a hunter and my son taught her to go into the creek and get them. Tracey dog is not aggressive and in any way violent, but she is a dog and dogs HUNT. That's nature!

The first week the cow would sleep in the tent and the dog didn't mind her much. She would lick the cows butt to help stimulate her bowls just like a mother cow, but other than that there was little to no interaction between the two. Again Tracy would lick her butt not to help the cow but to get rich stool from her. It's a dog and yes they eat poop, but in a since she was helping the calf. So, one evening I went with my boyfriend (I LEFT THE HOUSE) to feed the other cows. Tracey was inside with the family and the calf was on the porch. When I came home the calf was on the ground and Tracey was eating her ear. Of course I freaked out and had to whip my dog (for well being an animal) to get her to stop EATING THE CALF. It took me weeks to get over the fact my best friend; my dog was so evil. Then one day, a month after this happened I was about to go outside and fuss at Tracey for being around the calf. Then, I noticed Tracey was just standing there, and the calf was sucking on her ear. I grabbed the video camera and this is the images I filmed. I guess Tracy accepted that this was a calf we didn't eat, she was "family" like her, how she understood that other meat we eat and this meat we don't is beyond me. But for the next 4 months these two animals went everywhere together.

Baby Obama lived for 6 months, after she broke out of the yard (The neighbors didn't like that) and weighted close to or over 500 pounds I had to put her in the field with the other cattle. A 500 pound cow produces a lot of "MESS" and when it's in your garden or porch it's not cute (MEANING THE NEIGHBORS YARD, PORCH, GARDEN). Though, I was not able to teach her things that a mother cow could, and for her age she was very small. Meek. The other cows killed my baby Obama, because she was an outcast. She was not included in their pack. Yes cows travel in packs. She was the weakest cow and was trampled/tossed for a salt block. No I did not witness this or see it happen.

We do eat meat, and we do raise cattle. We DON'T butcher cows we RAISE CALF'S and sell them at an auction. I posted this video because it is cute, but it in no way shows true animal instinct. The dog is getting her ear scratched and licking any milk she can from the cows mouth. The cow is trying to get milk from the dog's ear.
In this wide world we cannot relate everything to a human's point of view. Animals are different from us and they have needs but they also have genetic programmed brains. Yes we need to protect them from cruelty, but we also have to understand nature is cruel. So until people who preach about protecting animals start providing the funds then NATURE WILL RUN ITS COURSE.

Tracey is still alive; in 2009 she was hit by a car the driver was so distributed she paid the entire hospital bill even though I asked her not to. Tracy dog is 6 years old now and doing fine. She still hunts frogs, enjoys stealing sweet feed from the cows, and sun bathing in the driveway. All the cows I have been around this was the first and only cow that I was not scared of. Cows that are not hand raised are not friendly and you can never predict an animal's behavior.

I will be revising this as I see fit; to answer repeated questions and clarify for the disbelievers that animals are different from humans. One cute little video can bring out so much HATE AND RAGE! My goodness people channel that toward something good. Volunteer, donate, and adopt something.
