8 Reasons You Should Stop Drinking Milk Now

image

What could be more American than a glass of milk? Cow's milk, that is. In light of this common perception, the time is long overdue to add the milk mustache to that ever-growing list of American myths. Human beings are not designed to drink any milk except human milk (only during infancy, of course). As you'll see below, consuming dairy products—milk, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, ice cream, etc.—is not green and it's not healthy.

It's also a nightmare for the cows themselves. Here's a little of how the folks at GoVeg describe it: "The 9 million cows living on dairy farms in the United States spend most of their lives in large sheds or on feces-caked mud lots, where disease is rampant. Cows raised for their milk are repeatedly impregnated. Their babies are taken away so that humans can drink the milk intended for the calves. When their exhausted bodies can no longer provide enough milk, they are sent to slaughter and ground up for hamburgers."

1. Dairy cows produce waste.
Lots of waste. In fact, your average dairy cow produces
120 pounds of waste every day—equal to that of more than two dozen people, but without toilets, sewers, or treatment plants.

2. Let me repeat: Dairy cows produce lots and lots of waste (and greenhouse gases).
California produces one-fifth of the country's total milk supply. According to
MilkSucks.com, "in the Central Valley of California, the cows produce as much excrement as a city of 21 million people, and even a smallish farm of 200 cows will produce as much nitrogen as in the sewage from a community of 5,000 to 10,000 people, according to a U.S. Senate report on animal waste."

Global Warming: MEAT THE TRUTH

British Meat and Dairy is Destroying Rainforests

image

More than 350,000 hectares of rainforest, twice the size of the Yorkshire Dales, is being chopped down to grow soy beans, most of which are genetically modified (GM).

The animal feed is then imported to British factory farms to produce cheap meat and dairy for supermarkets.

Friends of the Earth said that consumers are indirectly destroying the rainforest by buying meat and dairy and urged people to switch to a more vegetarian diet.

The charity pointed to new research by the Royal Agricultural College that found if just eight per cent of agricultural land in the UK was used to grow crops for animal feeds, it would be possible to halve the amount of feed currently imported from South America.

Would You Give it all up to Save the World?

image A UNITED Nations report recently said that the only way to save mankind from the ravages of hunger, poverty and climate change was for us all to go vegan.

It said that with the global population expected to reach 9.1 billion by 2050, it will be impossible to keep up with demand for meat and dairy products.

"Impacts from agriculture are expected to increase substantially due to population growth increasing consumption of animal products.

"Unlike fossil fuels, it is difficult to look for alternatives: people have to eat.

"A substantial reduction of impacts would only be possible with a substantial worldwide diet change, away from animal products."

But as comments on one of our letters here prove, it's not easy convincing people to give up their bacon butties, never mind eggs and milk too.

So if the UN was right in its forecast, would you consider changing your diet to cut out all meat and dairy products?

Global Warming 101: Solutions

Global warming may or may not be a problem.  Man may or may not be driving it.  Given the uncertainties, a significant amount of global regret may apply if we divert too much of our global wealth to solving what may be a non-existent or trivial problem, especially if that diversion mires billions in poverty.  On the other hand, we may also regret not doing anything if man-made global warming does turn out to be a problem.  It is therefore prudent to examine what steps we can take that would prove beneficial whether or not anthropogenic global warming turns out to be a problem.  These steps can be termed "no regrets" policies.

What makes a No Regrets Global Warming Policy?  A global warming policy can be termed "no regrets" as long as it:

* Reduces the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere, or

* Mitigates, prevents or reduces a harm associated with global warming, or

* Provides greater capacity for dealing with problems associated with global warming

* Without imposing significant cost or diverting economic activity.

Top Five "No Regrets" Policies

1.)  Eliminate all subsidies to fuel use.
Subsidies to energy R&D cost taxpayers millions of dollars while producing minimal
benefits. While these programs may be relatively small given the size of domestic energy markets, they serve little, if any, useful purpose while subsidizing large corporations at taxpayer expense. The potential threat of global warming, whether it is real or not, is simply one more reason to eliminate these subsidy programs. An international agreement aimed at ending energy subsidy with binding targets would be a significant victory for emissions reduction.  Unlike Kyoto, which forces an energy starvation diet on its participants, such a treaty would be a move to combat energy obesity.
