Why vegetarianism should not be advocated

By Adam Kochanowicz

I was once a vegetarian who believed so strongly in vegetarian education, I continued to recommend others go vegetarian even when I was a vegan.  Eventually, I came to my senses and realized the ethical implications of a vegetarian diet are no better than an omnivorous one.

Yet advocates today are happy to tell people to go vegetarian due to some faulty logic which I will examine. Advocates believe vegetarianism is useful because it leads to veganism and anyone who disagrees is "infighting."

I've been accused plenty of times by vegetarians of being "anti-vegetarian," I was once a vegetarian myself and I wish someone would have written this article for me.  For those of you who truly take the rights of animals seriously, I'm asking you to read this article with an open mind.

Should animal rights activists promote vegetarianism?

imageOf course, advocating an entirely vegan lifestyle can be overwhelming to some but should advocating vegetarianism be our response?  While an individual may not be persuaded to give up all animal products, we should keep our message vegan, never recommending vegetarianism as a step. I will explain why I believe this momentarily.

Truly, there are no sets of animal products which are more ethical to animals than another set. All require exploitation which puts an animal in the situation in which poor treatment is inevitable.  The general public is lead to believe, for instance, dairy can't be so bad because you don't have to kill the cow to get the milk.

However, pretty much all food animals will end up in the slaughter house once they no longer fulfill their previous role as existing for our use.  When a cow stops giving milk, a bird stops producing eggs, an elephant stops doing tricks, what do you suppose a business which relies on these functions will do?

Does Eating Meat Support Bestiality?

image

On Friday, the New York Times ran a front page story about chicken slaughter; the paper's quote of the day comes from a farmed animal researcher for the RSPCA, Marc Cooper, who says about chicken slaughter, "people don't want to know too much."

Indeed, slaughter is something meat-eaters don't want to think too much about. One needn't look further than their name to know that slaughterhouses are gruesome places. And just the term "factory farm" conjures up (correct) images of animals cruelly-crammed into filthy, polluting warehouses. But farmed animals endure abuses far worse than even the most horrific things we might think of when we hear "slaughterhouse" or "factory farm."

Some years back, PETA documented workers at a Smithfield supplier ramming gate rods into the anuses and vaginas of pregnant pigs, while laughing and bragging about it. One of the offenders was eventually given six months in jail, because he had (small wonder) spousal abuse charges in his past.

GO VEGAN - Slaughter House

There are endless reasons to become vegan. The most urgent, to humans, is the fact that meat production produces more global warming gases than all the cars, trucks, trains, ships, planes, on earth- combined (this according to UN and industry statistics).

Another obvious fact is that it's horrifically cruel to the animals. And animals do feel pain, have a sense of self, emotions, etc, just like humans. So causing them unnecessary pain is a true ethical concern.

It is also unhealthy for humans to consume meat and dairy products, and meat and dairy production waste irreplaceable natural resources and feed fewer people than if we simply raised vegan food. Plus, by going vegan, we'd be able to feed the 30,000 impoverished people who die daily due to starvation related disease. Meat production uses more resources and land and yields far less food than farming a vegan diet.

This is NOT opinion, it's all sound scientific fact based on peer reviewed scientific research.

Farming and consuming meat is NOT a sustainable practice, therefor it cannot continue. So, if you care about anything at all, do the right thing and go vegan. Now.

Your body will thank you, the animals will thank you, the planet will thank you, the 30,000 people who starve to death daily due to wealthy western nations growing meat rather than a vegan diet will thank you.

A senior UN official and co-author of a UN report detailing this problem, Henning Steinfeld, said "Livestock are one of the most significant contributors to today's most serious environmental problems". Livestock production occupies 70% of all land used for agriculture, or 30% of the land surface of the planet. It is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases, responsible for 18% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions as measured in CO2 equivalents. By comparison, all transportation emits 13.5% of the CO2. It produces 65% of human-related nitrous oxide (which has 296 times the global warming potential of CO2,) and 37% of all human-induced methane (which is 23 times as warming as CO2. It also generates 64% of the ammonia, which contributes to acid rain and acidification of ecosystems. Livestock expansion is cited as a key factor driving deforestation, in the Amazon basin 70% of previously forested area is now occupied by pastures and the remainder used for feedcrops. Through deforestation and land degradation, livestock is also driving reductions in biodiversity.

Poultry, Beef More Likely to Make You Sick, CDC Says

photo undercooked meat cdc report

If you want to reduce your chances of foodborne illness, go veggie. That's one take away from a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report linking types of food to illness outbreaks in the U.S. Of course, you can't blame the poultry or beef. And even vegetables can make you sick if they're not properly handled or prepared. Maybe another take away is the need for stricter enforcement of health codes.

The CDC report says 1,097 foodborne disease outbreaks were reported in 2007, resulting in 21,244 illnesses and 18 deaths. In 235 outbreaks where only one food commodity was identified, the largest number of illnesses, 691, were linked to poultry. A total of 667 were linked to beef. But leafy vegetables weren't far behind, with 590 illnesses.

Those are only some of the highlights—ones that may make it easier to plan your next meal. Keep it fresh. The most common foods associated with multi-state salmonellaoutbreaks included many commercially processed varieties of foods, like frozen pot pies, vegetable snacks, frozen pepperoni pizzas and canned hot dog chili sauce.

Reasons To Convert To A Vegetarian Diet

You may have considered switching to a vegetarian diet in the past, but may have been concerned at not being able to make this transition, or not being able to take in enough nutrients that your body needs. You may be a staunch meat eater and would never consider turning vegetarian, but do give some thought as to the benefits that a vegetarian diet can do for you as well as the people around you.

Farm animals are fattened in order to increase their size, increasing the weight of the meat, and thus increasing profits. Eating this meat increases your fat intake, thus increasing the chances of you developing heart disease or becoming obese.

Vegetarians have half the risk of developing heart disease when compared with their meat eating counterparts.

Rates of developing cancer amongst vegetarians are 25-50% less than in their carnivorous counterparts.

Each year, the vast majority of the millions of food poisoning cases reported are caused by meat.

There are no proteins or vitamins in meat that cannot be obtained from a fully vegetarian diet.

No Meat: Vegetarians and B12

There are essential nutrients that your body needs to function properly and promote optimum health. As a vegetarian— the absence of meat in your diet reduces the amount of vitamin B12 received through food intake as animal products are the primary source of this nutrient. Vegetarians and vegans could become deficient in B12, so it is important to know how to reduce the risk of deficiency.

Some vegetarians and vegans believe they can get adequate B12 through produce grown from manure treated soil, but according to Reed Mangels, Ph.D., R.D. this amount is “so small that more than 23 cups of organically grown spinach would have to be eaten every day in order to meet the adult RDA for vitamin B12.” Vegetarians that still consume dairy and eggs will not have as much of a risk, but those that lean more toward a near-vegan diet and vegans themselves should make sure to supplement or included foods and ingredients that assist in maintaining appropriate levels of this important nutrient.

Where to get your B12
Nutritional yeast
Nutritional yeast provides good amounts of not only B12 as well as protein. This cheesy tasting yeast comes in the form of flakes that can be sprinkled over dishes or used in sauces and other liquids.

Bring Meatless Mondays to ALL of America's Public Schools

  • Target: Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack
  • Sponsored by: Care2.com

In light of concerns about the planet and America's health, the Meatless Monday initiative continues to spread and is now making its way into public services like schools and hospitals.
Meatless Mondays are a small personal change that make a huge difference. Baltimore Public Schools launched Meatless Mondays and anticipate buying 120,000 fewer pounds of meat for the school year.
Eliminating meat from Monday lunch menus is a smart move for kids' health and the environment. Reducing meat can decrease intake of saturated fat and increase eating healthy fruits and vegetables. And numerous reports indicate that reducing meat consumption is integral to reducing environmental problems like water pollution and climate change.
Let's maximize the potential of Meatless Mondays and bring this revolutionary idea to all of America's public schools. Tell Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack of the USDA, which oversees the National School Lunch Program, to make Meatless Mondays mandatory in public schools.

Vegetarian Weight Loss Foods

image

Food, in itself, does not burn fat. But when you eat the right type of vegetarian foods, you can lose weight faster than those who do not eat the so-called weight loss foods.

Since they don't burn fat, how can they help you lose weight?

When you eat foods, your body will need to burn calories from your internal energy reserve (made up of stored fat, proteins and carbohydrates) to help in the breaking down of food (digestion).

When you eat low calorie vegetarian foods rich in fiber and complex-carbohydrate, the fibrous and complex structure in the food will trigger your body to burn more calories than the caloric content of the food itself to perform digestion, leading to a negative calorie effect.

So, that's how eating the right foods help you lose fat effectively.

Here are the lists of vegetarian foods for weight loss that'll help you lose weight more easily.

Vegan Diet, Vegetarian Diet: 8 Healthy People Discuss Why

Adopting a vegan diet, or a vegetarian diet, is an excellent way to maximize health. The vegan lifestyle or vegetarian lifestyle also saves our environment, and lessens the suffering of animals. In this video eight healthy vegetarians share why they choose to eat only plants for their nutrition.

No meat, No Milk, No Limits

It was an overdose of cheese pizza that did it for Steven Kern. A vegetarian since high school, Kern became a vegan after having a bad reaction to pizza in college. It just did not go down well, and a decade later, Kern still hasn't touched dairy or eggs.

"After going vegan I feel a lot lighter and healthier," says Kern, 28, who now has a business supplying grocery stores with vegan meat and dairy substitutes. "Growing up, I would always feel kind of bad after eating a big meal of a steak. But I never made the connection until later."

Like others who opt to eliminate animal products from their diet, Kern wanted to improve his health. But that's not the only motivation for today's vegans. Concerned about global warming, food safety and animal welfare, more people have turned to the plant-based diet, bringing veganism from the fringes of the culinary world closer into the mainstream.

"The term 'vegan' is less scary now," says Bryant Terry, the Oakland author of "Vegan Soul Kitchen," who has appeared on television with Martha Stewart and Emeril Lagasse. "A lot of the negative perceptions people had about who vegans are, and what vegan food had to be - i.e. boring or bland - are being exploded."

That shift has translated to the Bay Area restaurant world, too. Chefs are putting more animal- and dairy-free dishes on their menus, several new restaurants are focusing on attracting vegan diners, and food carts and pop-up restaurants with vegan options have large followings among vegans and carnivores alike.

After opening in Taiwan two years ago, the vegan restaurant chain Loving Hut now has 159 locations around the world, including five in the Bay Area; a new one in San Francisco's Westfield Mall is the vegan answer to Panda Express. Gracias Madre opened in San Francisco's Mission District late last year, with an organic, vegan Mexican menu, and Encuentro, a new wine bar in Oakland, offers vegetarian and vegan tapas exclusively. Half of the menu at Gather in Berkeley is sustainable meat dishes; the other half is vegetarian, with many vegan items.

Why Vegetarians Are More Intelligent than Meat Eaters

image Another evolutionarily novel value is vegetarianism.  It is exceedingly unnatural for humans to be vegetarian.

Humans are naturally omnivorous.  We are evolutionarily designed to eat both animal meat and plants.  Anyone who eschewed animal protein and ate only vegetables in the ancestral environment, in the face of constant food scarcity and precariousness of its supply, was not likely to have survived long enough and stayed healthy enough to have left many offspring.  So such a person is not likely to have become our ancestors.  On the other hand, anyone who preferentially ate animal protein and fat in the ancestral environment would have been much more likely to live longer and stay healthier.  They are therefore much more likely to have become our ancestors.

Vegetarianism would therefore be an evolutionarily novel value and lifestyle, as well as a luxury of abundance.  The Hypothesis would predict that more intelligent individuals are more likely to choose to become a vegetarian than less intelligent individuals.

This indeed appears to be the case.  Among the British respondents in the National Child Development Study, those who are vegetarian at age 42 have significantly higher childhood general intelligence than those who are not vegetarian at age 42.  (Childhood general intelligence was measured with 11 different cognitive tests at three ages before 16.)  Vegetarians have the mean childhood IQ of 109.1 whereas meat eaters have the mean childhood IQ of 100.9.  The difference is large and highly statistically significant.

Vegetarian NCDS

The relationship holds both among women and men separately.  Among women, vegetarians have the mean childhood IQ of 108.0 while meat eaters have the mean childhood IQ of 100.7.  Among men, vegetarians have the mean childhood IQ of 111.0 and meat eaters have the mean childhood IQ of 101.1, a 10-point difference!

What to Eat to Lose Weight as a Vegetarian

Eating RIGHT is the NUMBER ONE thing you must practise to lose weight effectively.

In other words, you must find out what foods to eat and how to eat them in a way to generate maximum fat loss for you. Otherwise, you'll gain weight easily despite working out at your favorite gym like mad.

What Foods to Eat for Weight Loss?

Cut down on those refined vegetarian foods that contain white sugar (simple refined carbohydrate), high-sodium and unhealthy vegetable saturated fats (except coconut oil).

Instead, choose more nutrient-dense vegetarian weight loss foods for their super high nutritional value but low in calories.

Such weight loss foods often come in whole, natural forms with abundant supply of fiber, protein, complex carbohydrates and various vitamins and minerals essential for your optimal health and well-being, besides helping you to lose weight.

Foods containing complex-carbs and fiber fill you up nicely before you consume too many calories. You'll feel full in your belly but without that heavy, "overeaten" feeling.

At the same time, your body will receive a steady stream of energy supply in the form of blood glucose because complex-carb requires more energy and longer time to digest due to its complex sugar structure, as compared to simple carbs. With addition of fiber, the digestion takes even longer. So you get to sustain your metabolic and physical activities over longer duration.

More importantly, complex-carb and fiber keep your blood sugar and insulin level in check, thereby preventing type 2 diabetes. It also puts a stop to your food cravings.

More fiber will also help to sweep toxins and waste out of your body quickly so they can't stay around in your intestines to create havoc, thereby accumulating fat in your midsection.

Protein also helps to increase satiation. Of course, plant-based proteins like beans, peas, and lentils, often contain fiber and other essential vitamins (e g. A & C) and minerals (e.g. potassium, iron, manganese) too.

Vegetarian Diet Can Reduce Chemicals in the Body

image

A research study conducted in Korea at a Buddhist Temple has generated some potentially beneficial insights. The study title is: “Influence of a five-day vegetarian diet on urinary levels of antibiotics and phthalate metabolites: A pilot study with ‘Temple Stay’ participants.”

A “temple stay” in this study means five days in a Buddhist temple, living like monks. Twenty five study participants ate vegetarian food during their stay. They were queried before entering the temple about their dietary habits, and urine samples were also taken at that time. High levels of antibiotics and phthalates were observed in the study participants before their temple stay. Presumably the antibiotic levels were due mainly to meat consumption. Phthalates were also high before entry, and they can  also be absorbed through meat consumption. However, they are also found in abundant supply in the manmade environment. They are mainly found in plastics, like food containers, shower curtains, floor tiles, personal care products, sex toys, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and many other applications. (Research about the potential health effects of phthalates on humans is ongoing.)
