Ignorance Annoys me More than Anything Else

Warning: Do not read unless you care about animals or have an open mind

When it comes to discussing a vegetarian or vegan diet, many ignorant people constantly claim that one person refraining from meat does not make the slightest bit of difference (which, in fact it does – a huge one). That vegans and even vegetarians are kooks, hippies, or self-righteous animal fanatics. Everyone has something to say about veganism… I personally get (playfully) teased for my new vegan diet and beliefs, but most people know me better than to say too much!

The fact is that for 22 years of my life, I ate meat and dairy, because I never knew any better. No one ever taught me any different.

And now that very kind of ignorance annoys me more than anything else.

I have only lived as a vegan for several months and it has completely changed my life. Well, I suppose now (as of last week, after I finished this article)I am living as a semi-vegan, which is the correct terminology for it… because I still eat free-range, natural, hormone and chemical free eggs which are completely cruelty-free and sourced locally. However, that’s all I eat. I don’t really care about the label, that’s unimportant. But anything that touches my lips I have to be certain that no animal has been harmed, or I can’t bring myself to eat it.

Everyone should at least know the solid facts. What actually goes on. The damage it causes, not only to the animals, but to our health and to this planet.

The fact that cows whimper and are extremely distressed when their calves are taken away from them from birth to be used for veal; and so that their milk may be used for our cereal and coffee, rather than for their own baby’s life. So we can eat cheese, which is bad for us anyway. Before any of you scream CALCIUM, do some research on how little of that calcium our bodies can actually absorb from cow’s milk. Hardly any. The concept of calcium in animal products is all a perpetual lie- anyone would do better to stick to soy milk.

The fact that pigs have the mental capacity of toddlers; they shriek and whine and genuinely feel sheer hysteria when they know that they are about to be slaughtered; when they see it happen to their friends before them…when they are just waiting for it to be their turn, getting picked off one by one. They don’t even have the dignity of being killed humanely. Paul McCartney once said that if slaughterhouses had glass walls, no one would ever eat meat again. He is one of my favourite vegans and, along with his late wife Linda, has contributed so much in the way of raising knowledge and awareness. Many other influential and well-known celebrities and public figures are also jumping on the vegan bandwagon these days, with the benefits of a vegan diet, both personally and for the planet, being too great to ignore.
